The Years of Elegance and Etiquette Part I~Tea in my Garden

Good day! My, what a delightful sight it 'tis to see my dear friends in my garden walk, and what a perfect day for a tea! Now whilst the kettle is boiling on the stove, do sign my guestbook, and sit in the shade. How lovely all of you look, and what a pleasure it 'tis that you have all joined me this afternoon for pleasant conversation and tea. Please walk with me to where I have set up my little tea things; the Southern part of my garden walk has very tall flowers and vines growing, making a seclusive alcove, shaded by lace canopies and trees.

Shall we dream of  some of the silk attire you might wear at an elegant tea?
My gown is all the way from Paris, France {which I am to visit in a few years!}. It is made up of a creamy, rose taffeta with a complementing silk sash with slightly ruffled sleeves, lace cuffs, and ruffles at the bottom. Hat designed at the New York Milliners.  {Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes}.
Perhaps, you would wear a romantic, ivory muslin gown with magenta-colored ribbon and neck scarf completed with white puff sleeves!:) Your hair in a beautifully piled into bun or plaited with braids with sugar ringlets {curls held with sugar water, popular during certain eras}.

Or perhaps, you might wear a flowing dress of pink {a girl's best friend} and white with puff sleeves, and your hair braided into a crown {very medieval} or just plainly down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excuse me as I go fetch my teapot. What tea shall you have? Vanilla, an exotic strawberries n' cream, chai, pomegranate, apple cranberry, orange, lemon,  Earl Grey, English breakfast, green tea?
{Am I overwhelming you?} Or perhaps, punch, sparkling cider, or iced lemonade is what you prefer.
At my tea, I shall serve an platters full of scones, tea cakes, tarts, sandwiches~and we shall all gaily nibble on our treats with gloved hands, buttoned with mother-of-pearl beads.
A vase of peonies and roses/lilacs set in the midst of a white, dainty table cloth.
Our bows, lacy caps, or ringlets shall bob sweetly up and down as melodious laughter fills the air.
Yet one thing is missing from the tea party~Etiquette. Feigning etiquette is not as easy as knowing it by heart.
How sweet and gracious, even in common speech,
Is that fine sense which men call
Courtesy!
Wholesome as air and genial as the light,
Welcome in every clime as breath of flowers~
It transmutes aliens into trusting friends,
And gives its owner passport round the globe.
~Fields
The Victorian people held etiquette close to their hearts like the lockets about their necks. In fact, etiquette was what kept society together. Young ladies who keep good mannerisms and the rules of etiquette show consideration and are good, pleasant company. Their speech and posture makes them appear either confident    and puts nervous company at ease.
 It is a truth that a hostess should be genteel, when entertaining company, but likewise the company should be as well-mannered as the hostess. Such mannerisms would be most welcomed, and appreciated, for it shall put the hostess at rest {not to mention as smile upon her face}, as the young {matured as people say} lady sweetly replies, "Yes, please. I should like another tart," or, "Oh, thank you, Mrs. White," giving her an air of grace and charm.
It is good manners, not rank, wealth or beauty that constitute the real lady. ~Roger Ascham
There are certain manners, which are learned in good society, of that force, if a person have them, he or she must be considered and is everywhere welcome, though without beauty, wealth, or genius. ~Emerson
Though, I do not agree with all of Emerson's writings, this statement can be greatly applied to etiquette.
We do not actually live in the 18th century {as many of you, I included, dream often of} where the the strictness of etiquette has lessened its grasp, I think etiquette and good manners have all-together deceased. It is a jewel to find a young lady down the street smile politely, or answer an adult without a smirk, or find a young man open the door for a lady~oh, what a jewel! No, it is hardly found in present times.
Good manners have dissipated! The consideration for others as well has disappeared. What I mean, is to say that being on time, being on schedule, being on time for an appointed time and place~has disappeared!
Of course, I would not at all like to have to eat with 50 forks every evening at dinner, nor go by some of the rules of etiquette which are most foreign to us, but the disappearance of good-manners completely? That is truly a sad sight to behold. And yet, that 'tis what is happening, has been happening, for the turning of the century.
Oh, what life would have been in a time so long ago!
Best regards from your dear friend,
The Proverbs 2011 Challenge ~Day One
Dearest Readers,
In my school Bible class, we are going through a basic study over the book of Proverbs, yet my teacher has encouraged us to deeply study the book of Proverbs on our own. This year, it is one of my resolutions to maintain a daily Bible study, of searching the Scriptures and reading Beautiful Girlhood.
Then I thought what a wonderful and encouraging idea it would be if my dear blogging sisters could join me as we study the full book of Proverbs.
 Of course, there are thirty-one chapters in the book of Proverbs total, and there are thirty-one days in the month of January. Each day, we will set aside a time to read a chapter during the day, whether in the morning or afternoon or at eventide. Then on our blog we shall post the verses that stood out to us most, and why. {You can even join if you skipped a few days, and go over and reread a few of the chapters you missed}
At the end of this event {on January 31st}, the young ladies who participated will be entered into a drawing for a handmade bookmark {made by me} with their favourite verse from Proverbs written on it.
blogbutton
~Basic Instructions~
Join me and read one chapter of Proverbs per day throughout the entire month.
Post on your blog {including the button I made} that same day, including verses that stood out to you the most and what it means to you or how we can apply it to our lives.
Link up your post to my linky.
On January 31st, the participants {who have been participating for at least two weeks to make it fair} shall be entered into a drawing for a handmade bookmark with their favorite verse from Proverbs written on it!
If you miss a few chapters, you can still join us! Just go back, and read the chapters you missed, and compile them into one post. Skipped too much? Well, you may read two or three chapters at a time instead.
Remember participants who have been participating in my challenge for two weeks minimum will be entered in my bookmark drawing.
I do so hope you shall be joining me! Such an encouragement it shall be, and I hope that this challenge blesses your walk with our Lord Jesus Christ!
~Day 1~
Proverbs 1:1~33
Well, to-day we read the introduction to Proverbs. The verse that really stood out to me was this:
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom.
 Yes, it is quite humbling to ask of the Lord for wisdom, yet that is an essential measure to avoid mistakes and follies of your future.
My history teacher put it like this:
What's the difference between knowledge and wisdom?
What is the difference? A person can be very knowledgeable, can store many important facts into his mind, yet can be the most unwise person in the whole universe because he lacks the Divine Wisdom that comes from the Lord and Him alone.
The Lord came to Solomon and said that he could have anything that his heart desired, and it would be given unto him. Solomon did not choose wealth, a kingly life, respect {one HUGE thing men desire}, honor, riches and land; no, he choose WISDOM. Would you choose that over that fancy new dress machine you have been  drooling over, or that camera, or that computer, or that *fill in the blank*? I do wonder how many of us {including me} would think of wisdom to be the first thing that would pop into our heads if God came to us and said, "I will give anything you wish."
Second thing that caught my eye was this:
My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
God commanded:
Honor thy father and Mother
Five simple words...words individually set aside, might not hold that great a meaning as the commandment
"Thou shalt not kill," or "Thou shalt not steal," or "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbors wife." Yet, the Lord wrote those five words with His own finger on that rough stone in front of Moses on Mt. Sinai, because this commandment was important; I mean, this commandment comes before the rest!
Wisdom starts with your elders; parents especially. When I was younger, I could not picture my parents being my age...I mean, come on! They are like ancient {to me when I was younger they were ancient; now, they're...*nervous smile* hi, Mom! Love you!:D}No, but really...learn from their experiences. They have been there, and messed up, and do not want you to make the same decisions they once did so long ago. The pain and hurt that they for such a long time throughout their life from decisions and bad choices they once made; they love you, so they do not want that ever to happen to you...EVER!!!
Divine Wisdom comes from above...one of the greatest gifts of mankind!
Hope all of you are enjoying the New Year!
Love in Christ,
Grace
Why the book of Proverbs?
My school Bible teacher encouraged that all of his students do a deep study of this book, because it it basically a book of wisdom for young people. I thought it would be such an encouragement to see other young ladies taking the challenge too! I hope you are blessed by this challenge, my dear friends!
 Why January?
Because, there are 31 books all together in Proverbs and 31 complete days in Jan. Besides, what a wonderful thing to start the New Year, by being challenged into studying God's Word.
Why 2011?
I have been greatly putting this aside far too long. Thank the Lord that He has given us a new year, and so I want to strengthen my walk with Him, as I have not studied the Scriptures as I ought to have done in the past few years. Well, now it's time, and I am starting with Proverbs because it is the book of wisdom!
 I hope this year is different, and I hope that you shall join me in my Proverbs challenge!
Please, if any of my writings you disagree with you, tell me in a pleasant and polite way your views and opinions. I respect them, as I hope you respect mine. I only hope that this challenge encourages and uplifts you, and strengthens your walk with Christ. May the Lord bless you!
My 200th Post! {And Giveaway}
Happy New Year's!!! It is a new year and with it, exciting things coming up soon!
Paris...a city that many a girl dreams of visiting one day; I have dreamed for over half of my life of seeing the Eiffel tower and behold the gorgeous countrysides of both France and Italy. Shall ever that dream come true?
Well, in two years time...my family is taking me to Europe!!!!! I am SO excited that in 2012 I will be boarding a plane en route to Paris, France!
All right, now for the tea-inspired things on my blog. Thanks to my dear friend Johanna for telling me this in her Christmas letter, January is...
The National Month of Tea!!!
Therefore, I have decided to celebrate, by having a blog makeover, and writing up a few historical posts that I am naming them
 The Years of Elegance and Etiquette.
So join me here, in my beautiful garden walk, for a tea party! What do you prefer, vanilla, chai, and with cream or sugar or both? I do suppose we shall have a delightful time, giggling under the maple trees, and smelling the sweet lavender and roses or peonies...*sigh* it will be as spring has returned to my garden once more even though the dead of winter is settled amongst us. {New Year's is a bit depressing to me, because it marks the end of the holidays, and the beginning of the monotonous winter season!:)}
And how could anyone refuse such a lovely tea table laden with rose cakes, and berry tarts? Oooo, yummy!
